Spring 2019 - 1st Half Term

We hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas holidays. Thank you so much for the kind words, cards and lovely gifts. We really appreciate your generosity.

Happy New Year! We are really looking forward to another exciting term.

As part of our PSHE this year, we have a fantastic trip to Kidzania planned for Thursday 24th January. It is an interactive city made for children to experience ‘real-life’ jobs and responsibilities. We are sure that the children will love it!

Our topic for the spring term is ‘Incredible India’. We will be exploring this fascinating country, its culture and physical and human geography. After the half term, we will have a special Indian experience day, where the children will learn some Indian dancing, taste Indian food and make Indian crafts. If you are able to help us with this, then please speak to your child’s class teacher.

In English, we will be using the book ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Into The Jungle’ (stories for Mowgli), to write character descriptions and our own stories. We will also do some persuasive writing around these texts and write non-chronological reports about Incredible India.

In maths, we will be: revising place value; learning the rules for rounding; recapping the use of formal methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication & division; converting units of measurement and time; solving problems involving money; finding fractions of amounts; comparing fractions and decimals, and identifying angles and lines of symmetry in 2d shapes.

Keep calm and carry on reading!
We love to read in Year 4! We have put together 20 recommended reads for you to enjoy throughout the year. We also have a wide range of other fantastic books available in our classrooms. Each time you read one of the recommended reads, you will be rewarded with a sticker on your Year 4 bookmark. Throughout the year, you will also receive reading certificates of achievement. We look forward to discussing these brilliant books with you. It is still very important that you try to read every day and to an adult at home at least twice a week. It would be wonderful to have some parent reading volunteers in Year 4 so please let your child’s class teacher know if this is something you would like to do.
We are hoping to be able to make some simple instruments as part of our Sound science topic. We would appreciate it if you could save any plastic tubs or cartons, small cardboard boxes or tubes and similar (that would otherwise be recycled) and send them into school with your child.
Every Friday, the children will receive Maths and English homework that will need to be returned by the following Thursday. Buzz time will still continue as normal on Friday mornings, so keep practising! We may also give you some topic projects to complete throughout the term.
PE lessons will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, so please make sure that you have your named PE kit in school on these days. Please ensure that your child has warm clothing to wear for their outdoor session.
Parent Partnership
We really believe in good home-school communication, so If you have any concerns or questions throughout the year, then please do not hesitate to ask us, we are always more than happy to help.

We are really looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!
